英会話のコツ: Describing Lost Objects

Have you ever forgotten something on the train or dropped something in the shopping mall?  Or maybe you couldn’t find your luggage in the baggage claim in the airport.  If so, you probably needed to describe what it looked like.

Size: You can choose to be very specific and use centimeters or millimeters to describe your lost bag, or you can gesture with your hands.

  • It’s about 10 by 20 centimeters.

  • It’s about this big (use your hands to show HOW big).

Color: While black and white are easy enough to find, red, blue, and purple might not be.  Use color shades to be more color specific.

  • It’s a scarlet red with burgundy handles.

  • There are navy blue stripes on the sides.

  • The lining is a pinkish-violet color.
    * You can add - ish onto the end of the color to say it is like pink, but not exactly pink.

  • There is a reddish ribbon on the handle.

Material: What is it made of?

  • It’s a leather bag.

  • My umbrella is plastic.

  • My lunch box is stainless steel with plastic chopsticks.

  • The lining is vinyl.

  • The cover is made of felt.

  • My sneakers have velcro straps.

  • My thermos is aluminum with a rubber cap.
