英会話のコツ: Everyday verbs

This is a typical day for most people - the sentences rely on some verbs that you might not have seen before.

  • I wake up at 6:00

  • I wash my face and brush my teeth (be careful not to say “wash” my teeth)

  • I squeeze toothpaste onto my toothbrush (You can also squeeze wasabi paste onto your sushi)

  • I make toast and coffee for breakfast

  • I spread butter onto my toast

  • I add 3 teaspoons of sugar to my coffee

  • I stir my coffee before drinking it

  • I get dressed after breakfast and go to work

  • I arrive at work before 8:00

  • I take my lunch break at 12:00

  • I finish work at 5:00

  • I wash my hands when I get home

  • I open the rice cooker and fill my bowl with rice

  • I pour miso soup into another bowl and sit down for dinner

  • My wife made grilled mackerel (鯖)for dinner, so I carefully pick out all the small bones before eating it

  • After dinner, I take a bath and relax

  • After the bath, I change into my pajamas / roomwear

  • Before going to bed, I set my alarm clock for 6:00 the next day

Examples with “brush”:

  • I brush my teeth

  • She brushes her hair

  • The man brushes his horse’s mane

  • The businessman brushes lint (糸くず) from his trousers

  • John tried to ask Mary out on a date, but she brushed him off (はねつける)

  • * Some people with thinner/shorter hair comb (くしで梳く)their hair
