英会話のコツ: Expressing Regret (後悔)

Do you ever feel bad about things you have done? We call them regrets, we regret less good things we do.  I went swimming on a cold day and I caught a cold. I regret going swimming last week. The tofu ice cream was not good. I regret getting tofu ice cream, I should have gotten green tea ice cream.

We also often use should have to talk about regrets.

Should have + Past Participle (過去分詞)

  • I was late to work. I should have gotten up earlier.
  • I ate too much tempura and feel sick. I shouldn’t have eaten so much.
  • I have a cold. I should have worn a jacket.
  • Settsu is more peaceful than Osaka City. I should have moved here two years ago.
