Halloween - Not only for kids!

What comes to mind when you think of Halloween? Candy? Kids in costumes? ... How about a night club full of men and women in costumes partying like there's no tomorrow???  That's exactly how we celebrated Halloween when I was in Hawaii.  If you don't believe me Google "Waikiki Halloween" and take a look at the images that come up. DISCLAIMER: Some of the pictures might be NSFW ( not safe for work ) as some of the participants in the Halloween "parade" really go all out with their costumes and some girls don't leave a lot to the imagination sometimes.

Let me back up here to when I was growing up.

When I was a child we used to go trick-or-treating around the neighborhood by ourselves.  We would dress up in a costume and find the biggest paper shopping bag we could find, in those days we didn't use plastic shopping bags, so we could get as much candy as possible.   We would set off down the street knocking on doors and ringing doorbells.  When someone answered the door we would yell, "Trick or treat!"  Sometimes the owners of the house would be sitting outside in a scary costume to scare us when we approached their house. It was a really fun time!

When I had grown up and was too old to go trick-or-treating, we would get dressed up and go down to Waikiki.  We would "parade" up and down Kalakaua Avenue checking out all the different people's costumes. It was great to stop and take pictures with different people and surprisingly there were a lot of visitors from Japan that got dressed up and took part in the festivities. Then we graduated to the night clubs.

Walking up and down Waikiki was fun but we were more sophisticated now so we partied in the night clubs.  Everyone would drop a bunch of cash to get the best costume in the house.  There were contests to determine who had the best costume with cash prizes and limousine rides.  One year I made a great pirate!  In the night club is was like there were no rules on Halloween and it was crazy! People were doing shots like crazy and it was a blast!

How do you celebrate Halloween?  Have you ever dressed up in a costume?  Would you like to try it?

Hope you enjoyed this!

Mahalo!
